View playlistDr. Matthew Springer (1963-2026), a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, was also an avid musical performer (piano, violin, percussion, erhu) and arranger. He shared a music stand with our President in the Violin I section of the Peninsula Symphony, where he also played timpani.
His earlier career included piano and percussion solos with the Stanford Orchestra, multi-instrument recitals, Stanford Percussion Ensemble, Redwood Symphony, UCB Symphony, TheatreWorks and Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps. Having studied erhu (Chinese violin) with Chen Jiebing, he played with the South Bay Chinese Orchestra and San Francisco's Golden Gate Ensemble and performed occasionally with Melody of China and as erhu soloist with the S.F. Civic Symphony and the S.F. Composers Chamber Orchestra.

His various arrangements have been featured in Strings Magazine and include, in addition to the free downloads above, Four Pieces from Khachaturian's Gayane Ballet Suite arranged for mallet percussion ensemble (1994) [out of print], and Bach's Sleepers Awake [Dishinger quintet version condensed for string quartet] (2001).
